Veterans Golden Age Games Needs Volunteers for Variety of Tasks

The Center for Community Engagement invites students, faculty, staff and members of the community to volunteer for the 2014 National Veterans Golden Age Games, a national sports and recreation competition for senior veterans, hosted this year on the University of Arkansas campus.

From June 28 through July 3, some 800 veterans are expected compete in the event, which will include cycling, bowling, air rifle, field, golf, horseshoes, checkers, dominoes, nine-ball, shuffleboard, swimming, table tennis, and track.

Volunteers will support all aspects of the games, including hospitality, greeting, registration, setup, teardown, baggage handling, photography, scorekeeping, and assisting veterans in the events.

University supervisors may also allow employees to volunteer during work hours for events that benefit the university. The event will be the staff person’s assignment for the day or hour. University offices are encouraged to volunteer together as a staff.

Numerous volunteer time slots are available throughout the event. To volunteer, please fill out the volunteer application.

A detailed description of each volunteer opportunity is also available, and more information about the event can be found at VeteransGoldenAgeGames.VA.gov.

The premier senior adaptive rehabilitation program in the nation and one of the most progressive senior sports programs in the world, the Golden Age Games are the only national sports program designed to improve the quality of life for all older veterans.

The games are a national showcase for the preventive and therapeutic value of sports, fitness and recreation for all older Americans.

The University of Arkansas is recognized as a national leader in service to veterans and military personnel who are pursuing higher education. BestColleges.com named the university one of the top 25 schools for veterans this year, a recognition that the university “strives to meet the needs of each veteran student by taking an individualized approach to counseling and academic assistance.” The university’s Veterans Resource and Information Center provides a hub for veterans and military dependents or spouses who want help with navigating the university’s programs.
