University Recreation Builds State-of-the-Art Climbing Wall

University Recreation is in the process of building a state-of-the-art climbing wall. The new climbing wall will replace the old climbing wall, built in 2002, in Gym 1 of the Health, Physical Education and Recreation Building.

“We are excited to refresh our climbing program with a new climbing wall,” said Jeremy Battjes, university recreation director. “The new wall not only conforms to the latest standards in the industry, but programming options substantially increase allowing for new programs and educational opportunities to prepare students to climb in the outdoor setting.” 

Demolition of the old climbing wall took place May 5, and construction of the new wall began May 19.

“The old wall’s surface was worn down and far from the desired friction necessary for a good climbing experience,” said Jonathan Vogler, university recreation coordinator for the outdoor connection center.

UREC’s new climbing wall will be 28 feet tall and 44 feet wide, creating a total of 3,200 square feet of climbing space.  

“It has unique features like a large crack and more diverse rock-like surfaces to better simulate outdoor terrain,” said Vogler. “Another awesome feature of the climbing wall will be the rappel ledge that will allow us to offer classes and clinics on rappelling, anchor building, multi-pitch climbing, as well as lead climbing.”

Completion of the new climbing wall is estimated to be the end of June.
