Summer Landscape Architecture Courses Offered in Fay Jones School
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Two landscape architecture professors in the Fay Jones School of Architecture will be teaching a new course this summer, LARC 4753 Incremental Sprawl Repair, during the second summer session on the University of Arkansas campus in Fayetteville.
The course, taught by Carl Smith, associate professor, and Noah Billig, assistant professor, will introduce the main causes, manifestations and results of urban sprawl. Students will be asked to provide design and planning solutions that address repairing sprawled urban and/or regional environments. Students’ solutions will address environmental, development and policy facts and processes, while also engaging in creative, innovative and sustainable design and planning resolutions.
Billig is also teaching LARC 1003 The American Landscape during the first summer session. This is the first time this course has been offered in the summer. This course investigates humankind’s changing attitudes toward urban and rural outdoor spaces as reflected in aesthetic and other cultural values. The origins of the environmental/conservation movement and the development of the American land ethic will be explored. The coursework will help students develop an appreciation of the relationship of the natural and built historic landscape to the arts and the importance of open space planning for a healthy environment within a global context.
Also during the first summer session, Billig will teach LARC 5043 Public Participation in Design and Planning. This landscape architecture seminar course is intended to provide students with the basic skills and knowledge to engage in various public participation techniques, with particular emphasis on design, planning and development situations. This course includes strategies for involving under-represented groups in public processes that concern planning, design and policy decisions in communities. This course teaches a wide variety of participation techniques, including questionnaire design, charrettes, grassroots organizing, stakeholder identification and analysis, and other strategies for engaging the public.
