Reminder: Faculty in Residence Position Deadline to Apply Monday, March 5

The Faculty in Residence is a University of Arkansas faculty member who serves residential undergraduate students with the purpose of enhancing their academic and cultural experience while being enrolled at the University of Arkansas. This is a live-in opportunity with the Faculty in Residence being provided an apartment in the Northwest Quad residence hall. 

The goals of the position:

  • To shape and enhance the social, cultural, and educational life of residential students.
  • To connect with individual residential undergraduate students to promote the values of academic success and citizenship/community engagement in the residence hall and on the University of Arkansas campus.
  • To create a strong collaboration between the Faculty in Residence and individual undergraduate and professional staff members of the University Housing team including residence hall staff.
  • To foster strong collaborations between University Housing, academic departments, and the faculty at the University of Arkansas.

The Faculty in Residence meets weekly with assigned coordinator for residence education and resident assistants to plan programs and address building issues. These meetings are specifically designed to discuss potential program initiatives, specific student issues, and to solicit the help of Resident Assistants in the planning of events.

The Faculty in Residence meets at least once a semester with residence House of Representatives (hall senate) in designated building assignment. These meetings are to introduce the Faculty in Residence role and to solicit their assistance in the planning of program initiatives.

The Faculty in Residence will collaborate with residential hall staff to design and coordinate regular programs for residential students. Whether curricular or co-curricular, these programs should be educationally purposeful and contribute to students’ intellectual and social growth. Some programming should include collaboration with other campus offices, residential colleges, and units within the university community. These could be on research, how to connect with a professor outside of class, study skills, career development, balancing studying/social life, watching a movie and leading a discussion, attending a cultural, athletic, or service learning event.

The Faculty in Residence will participate in at least one service-oriented activity per semester with residents (CREs, RAs, and House of Representatives can assist with this).

The Faculty in Residence will maintain significant visibility in the residence halls. This could include but not limited to attendance at student programs, hosting faculty or community dinners, creating a discussion series and/or panel discussions; and participating in Housing Department Residence Education events such as staff selection and end-of-the-year events. It also includes frequent informal interactions with students and staff in the residence hall.

The Faculty in Residence will provide a detailed monthly update on all their activities to the associate director of academic engagement. At the end of the spring semester an annual report should be submitted that describes and assesses the activities for the academic year and suggest areas for improvement. All information will be submitted to the Executive Director of Housing for reporting purposes.

The Faculty in Residence will serve as a liaison to faculty members involved in Adopt-A-Prof program and will abide by all University Policies and Procedures.

Benefits include:

  • Semi-furnished 3-4 BR apartment (Internet, basic cable, local telephone service, utilities).
  • A partial meal plan (approximately 10 meals per week during spring and fall semesters) when dining halls are operational.
  • Applicants must be full-time, 100 percent-appointed faculty member currently employed at the University of Arkansas. Applicants who are tenured or on tenure-track faculty are preferred.
  • Candidates should have a minimum of 2-3 years of university teaching experience and demonstrated experience in academic advising and mentoring.
  • Student-centered, collaborative with residence life staff, able to work with students, and build sustainable links between curricular and co-curricular experiences.

The Faculty in Residence position is limited to a three-year term to be evaluated annually. Appointment can be renewed. The Faculty in Residence is expected to be on campus during the Fall and Spring semesters and during staff training periods in August and January as requested.

  • What strategies you would implement to provide resident students with effective academic advising and mentoring,
  • What strategies you would implement to create initiatives that have a defined educational purpose and that can achieve meaningful and assessable educational goals,
  • How you would collaborate with the residence hall staff toward enhancing student learning, development, and academic success,
  • How you would work effectively with other faculty in the residence halls to improve student learning/academic success?

Submit a letter of support from your department chair. The letter of support from the department chair should include an endorsement of the faculty member and address the candidate’s qualifications in relation to the goals of the position and the position responsibilities.
