Jonathan Segal's 'Architect as Developer' Lecture Rescheduled for April 2

“Architect as Developer,” the lecture by Jonathan Segal, was postponed due to inclement weather. It has been rescheduled for 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 2, and will take place in Ken and Linda Sue Shollmier Hall, Room 250 of Vol Walker Hall, on the University of Arkansas campus in Fayetteville, as part of the Fay Jones School of Architecture lecture series.
Segal (FAIA) redefines the role of the traditional architect by exclusively eliminating the client and developing, constructing and designing his own work. He is considered Downtown San Diego’s most successful and pioneering residential architectural/development company.
Throughout the past 20 years, Segal, of Jonathan Segal FAIA & Development Co., has created and modeled the unique practice of “architect as developer.” He has designed, developed and constructed national, award-winning, single-family live/work residences and medium- to high-density, mixed-use housing in downtown San Diego and La Jolla, Calif., since 1988.
Architects of today are losing control and slowly losing their ability to lead the direction of architecture and place making in the urban environment. By practicing his firm prototype, the architect has the ability to become the owner, therefore eliminating the client and general contractor from the design and building process.
Due to his commitment to design, Segal has received six national Honor Awards from the American Institute of Architects and seven Residential Architect awards. His project, The Charmer, a mixed-use housing and retail project, was awarded Residential Architect’s Project of the Year for 2012 and was recently granted the 2013 Distinguished Practice Award from the California Council of the AIA.
During his talk, Segal will discuss the concepts and steps involved in developing your own architecture by analyzing his award-winning project pro formas. Through “architecture as developer,” Segal’s goal is to promote this method of architectural practice to other architects, so they also can have control, pride and financial independence.
