Penn State Professor to Give Talk on Hydration Issues with Elderly

W. Larry Kenney, a professor of physiology and kinesiology at Noll Laboratory at Penn State University, will speak at noon Wednesday, Feb. 12, in the Graduate Education Building auditorium, Room 166, on the University of Arkansas campus.

The lecture is part of the Hydration Lecture Series by the Human Performance Laboratory in the College of Education and Health Professions. The title of Kenney’s lecture is “Thirst, Fluid Intake, and Hydration in The Elderly.”

Kenney’s research involves human physiological responses to extreme conditions of exercise, heat and cold stresses, and dehydration, and the impact of aging and disease states on these responses. His research has been continuously funded by NIH since 1983, the year that he joined the faculty at Penn State.  During his time there, he has received $10 million in funding as a principal investigator and another $36 million as a co-investigator.

Kenney, who received a Faculty Scholar medal from Penn State in 2001, has published more than 200 journal articles and dozens of book chapters. He is an author of Physiology of Sport and Exercise, a best-selling textbook in exercise physiology.

Kenney has served as President of the American College of Sports Medicine (2003-04) and received the organization’s Citation Award in 2008. He is also active in the American Physiological Society and chaired the Gatorade Sports Science Institute for several years.
