UAPD Offers Crime Prevention Tips

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. –University of Arkansas Police Department often sees a dramatic increase in property crimes at the end of a semester. There are small things students can do to greatly reduce their chances of becoming the victim of a property crime.

Keep your doors locked at all times At the end of the spring semester, 13 burglary reports were filed by UAPD officers in residence halls. In all of these reports, a door was left unlocked.  There were no reports of forced entry in any residence hall burglaries.

Do not leave property unattended in public places, even for a short time This includes textbooks, cell phones, laptop computers, I-pods, I-pads, and even jackets. All of these items have value and they are the most commonly reported stolen items on campus.

Do not leave valuable items in your vehicle. Theft from a motor vehicle in university parking lots and parking decks is one of the most common types of theft on campus.

Immediately report any suspicious activity. After burglaries witnesses often come forward to say they saw someone checking doors or looking in vehicles.  These crimes can be prevented if suspicious activity is reported.
