This Week in the Visual and Performing Arts: Dec. 6-13

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Performances and exhibitions continue this week. The J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences invites students, faculty, staff and friends to attend the following on-campus and off-campus events in the visual and performing arts. Some events may be rescheduled due to inclement weather. If the university is closed, then the events for that day will be cancelled. Watch the university calendar and websites for the departments of music and art for weekend cancellations and possible rescheduling.

Two art exhibitions, An Odyssey of Dreams: A Decade of Paintings 2003-2012 in the Arkansas Union Anne Kittrell Gallery and exhibition of work by students and faculty in the painting program in the Fine Arts Center’s hallway exhibition cases, close Friday, Dec. 6.

Also on Friday, guest artist Cole Closser will present a workshop at 12 p.m. and a lecture at 5:30 p.m. The events will be in rooms 207 and 213 in the Fine Arts Center, respectively.

The department of art’s MFA Student Exhibit, a group exhibition by students pursuing a Master of Arts, will open with a reception at 5 p.m. Friday at sUgAR, the university’s student art gallery. The gallery will have additional hours from 1 p.m. until 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7. sUgAR is located on the basement level of One East Square Plaza in Fayetteville.

The University of Arkansas Choral Ensembles will present Winterfest at 7:30 p.m. Friday at First United Presbyterian Church in Fayetteville (if the university is closed on Friday, then the event will be rescheduled).

Dylan Gillard will give a trumpet recital at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, in the Fine Arts Center’s Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

The University of Arkansas Percussion Ensemble will perform the Poetics of Winter in the Great Hall of Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

Also on Saturday in Stella Boyle Smith, Rachael Phillppe will give a violin recital at 6 p.m. and Jura Margulis and Tomoko Kashiwagi will give a piano recital at 8 p.m.

Nathan Cunningham will give a trumpet recital at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

Also on Sunday in Stella Boyle Smith, students from the music department will perform a benefit concert for the victims of Typhoon Haiyan at 5 p.m. Andrew Chu will give a violin recital at 7 p.m.

The University of Arkansas Symphony Orchestra will perform at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 9, in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

The University of Arkansas Schola Cantorum will present A Child’s Christmas in Wales at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10, at Central United Methodist Church in Fayetteville.

Also on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m., the University of Arkansas Tuba and Euphonium Quartets will perform in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

The University of Arkansas Opera Theatre will perform at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 11, in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

The department of art’s Senior Capstone Exhibit, a series of solo exhibitions by senior capstone students working in a variety of media, will open with a reception at 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 12, at sUgAR.

Also on Thursday, the String Coalition will give a concert at 7 p.m. in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall as part of the department of music outreach program.

The department of music outreach program will present its fall concert at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 13, in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.
