Erin McFalls-Johnson, a 2012 graduate of the University of Arkansas, has been named 2013 English Teacher of the Year for Secondary Level Education by the Arkansas Council of Teachers of English and Language Arts.

Since 2004, the group has identified and honored outstanding English and language arts teachers annually, according to a news release. Judging is conducted by a panel of board members who consider the nominees' lifelong teaching, professionalism and service, with emphasis on recent achievements.

McFalls-Johnson, a 10th grade Pre-AP English teacher at Fayetteville High School, is a Northwest Arkansas Writing Project Fellow and a National Board Certified Teacher. She earned a Master of Education degree in 2012 from the College of Education and Health Professions and she serves as a mentor teacher for teacher-education students. The Northwest Arkansas Writing Project is also based in the College of Education and Health Professions.

McFalls-Johnson's award was presented at the ACTELA Fall Luncheon in October at Little Rock's Marriott Hotel (formerly the Peabody). She spoke to more than 100 teachers at the luncheon, which is held during the annual Arkansas Curriculum Conference.
