TAP Program Introduces Students to Information Systems, Technology
The office of diversity and inclusion at the Sam M. Walton College of Business, the college's Information Technology Research Institute and corporate sponsors conducted the Technology Awareness Program on July 7-12.
Twenty-four high-school students from under-represented groups were introduced to the field of information systems, college life and careers in information technology. The students also interacted with top business professionals and observed them in their work environments.
The students took part in a challenging team project provided by the college's information systems faculty that helped develop research, teamwork, communication and oral presentation skills. The project taught the students how to analyze big data through the creation of an interactive dashboard.
The program included a visit to J.B. Hunt Transport Services Inc.; a presentation at the Walmart Innovation Center and a tour at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. Students also took a trip to Fast Lane Entertainment for bowling, laser tag and go-karts.
The program concluded with the students presenting their projects, followed by a dinner attended by college staff, faculty and parents.
