Clean Out Your Office and Donate to the Archives
Be like Congressman John Paul Hammerschmidt--donate your papers! (MC 1230, series 21, box 3, file 3, image 63. Special Collections, University of Arkansas Libraries, Fayetteville.)
Do you have outdated files taking up precious space in your office? The university archives may be able to help. Join Amy Allen, university archivist, for a presentation about donating materials to the university archives on July 17. The presentation will be repeated on July 25. Both presentations will be held at 3 p.m. in Mullins Library, room 104. She will review the kinds of documents and other materials that are appropriate for the archives.
Established in 2010 as a unit within the University Libraries' special collections department, university archives seeks donations of materials documenting the history of the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville campus. It serves as a repository for non-current official materials of enduring value that document the institutional memory of the university.
Since the state of Arkansas has no records retention laws, the university archives depend on voluntary donations of materials documenting the history of the university. Allen will clarify the types of materials that should be donated to the university archives and those that can be recycled or discarded. A collection policy and other information about university archives are available online.
Office managers, administrative assistants, and faculty and staff who manage files are encouraged to attend. If you are unable to attend either presentation but would like to learn about the university archives, Allen is available for individual consultations. Email her at ala005@uark.edu or call 479-575-6370 to set up an appointment.
