Red, White & True: Women Changing Lives
Red, White & True is officially underway for the 2013 fiscal year! Volunteers have been announced, packets have been mailed and university faculty and staff have started supporting the campus initiatives they care about most.
One such initiative is the Women’s Giving Circle, which comprises employees, alumnae and friends of the university who recognize that female donors have the capability of making a tremendous impact on the U of A campus. This impact grows exponentially when the contributions from women are united in support of the university through a collective voice.
This past fall, the circle celebrated its 10th anniversary and awarded a record $100,000 in awards to eight university and community programs. Since its creation in 2002, the circle has provided more than $600,000 in support to nearly 50 programs. Some of these, like the Safe Ride program, are well-known across campus. However, the Women’s Giving Circle has also supported breast cancer research, domestic violence prevention, literacy, scholarships and fellowships, the promotion of health and wellness and other critical needs of our campus.
“We encourage faculty and staff from all across campus to consider joining the Women’s Giving Circle,” said Charlotte Taylor, senior director of development for University Initiatives and staff liaison for the circle. “All our members feel a sense of ownership in the projects that are funded through the circle, but U of A employees in particular have a real understanding of how the grants make a difference to the university. Being involved is truly gratifying, and it’s inspiring to see the philanthropic impact that women can make.”
At their fall 2012 voting event, Chancellor Gearhart made a surprise announcement and offered to match contributions up to $50,000 if the circle can increase its membership to 100 by fall 2013. It’s a challenge the group is excited to accept, and the campus community is invited to help them reach their goal.
Membership in the Women’s Giving Circle is open to all alumni and friends of the university with a commitment of $1,000 per year. However, faculty and staff members and their spouses are eligible for membership at a special rate of $500 annually. Those who utilize the payroll deduct option can fulfill their pledge for about $41 per month over the course of a year.
As you consider involvement in this year’s Red, White & True initiative, remember that there are countless areas that appreciate and need your support, including the Women’s Giving Circle. Give to the area that inspires you the most, and make a difference today for the YOU of A.
