The University of Arkansas Chapter of Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society for Freshman initiated 153 new members into the organization and installed new officers on April 14. Founded in 1924, Alpha Lambda Delta is a national honor society that recognizes and encourages academic excellence among first year students. Today, Alpha Lambda Delta has over 275 chapters throughout the United States. The University of Arkansas Chapter was chartered in April 2012 after being active as the First Year Honor Society since 2010.

In order to be eligible for membership, students must be in the top 20 percent of their class, while maintaining full-time student status in their first semester at the university. Members receive the opportunity to engage in community service projects, apply for national and chapter scholarship and fellowship opportunities, build leadership experience, and benefit from a society that is focused on helping them maintain high academic performance and civic engagement across campus.

During the ceremony, the 2013-2014 chapter president, Dennis Burchette, gave remarks honoring the new members as well as outgoing officers and officers-elect for their academic successes. He also challenged them to continue pursuing the mission and vision of the honor society at the University of Arkansas.

“Being a part of Alpha Lambda Delta sets you apart from other students, and allows you to serve as a role model to your peers. It will engrave in your lives a lasting sense of service and scholarship; serving as president of this phenomenal honor society will allow me the opportunity to share with the members as well as the university body my enthusiasm for both scholarship and service. Believing in the words of Mahatma Ghandi who said, "The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others. I see involvement in Alpha Lambda Delta as an upcoming aspiration of first year students. I challenge and encourage members in the progress that we make in the upcoming year, to inspire success among all incoming students and upperclassmen.”

Alpha Lambda Delta will celebrate the end of the school year and welcome its newest members on May 2 during its End of the Year Event. Members will also engage in a book drive donating to Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore and Northwest Arkansas Women’s Shelter.
