ASG and RIC Honor Outstanding Faculty Members

Associated Student Government and Residents’ Interhall Congress awarded three faculty members the Outstanding Faculty Member Award for the 2012-13 academic year at the annual Faculty Appreciation Banquet.

“From the faculty perspective, this is a great award. It is the kind of feedback and recognition that the faculty value because it comes from our most important audience,” said Ro DiBrezzo, vice provost for academic affairs.

Professors Curt Rom, Susan Bristow and Carleton Holt were honored with the Outstanding Faculty Member Awards.

Curt Rom serves as director of the Dale Bumpers Honors Program and is a professor in the Dale Bumpers College of Agriculture, Food and Life Sciences. One student described Rom as, “encompassing every tenant of academic caliber and excellence that the university embodies. … Dr. Rom is the most attentive and dependable faculty member I have ever come into contract with, despite his vast expanse of professional responsibilities and leadership position. He is never perturbed by my endless questioning and is a source of strength and sagacity.”

Susan E. Bristow is an instructor in the Sam Walton College of Business, within the department of information systems. A student described professor Bristow with three adjectives — considerate, relatable, and caring — and goes on: “She embodies the idea of the ‘You of A,’ in her class, we are not just a number, seat, or face. She makes every student feel welcomed and truly believes that there is no such thing as a stupid question. She challenges us to think outside of the world of accounting. … She is truly deserving of this award.”

Carleton Holt is associate professor of educational leadership in the College of Education Health Professions’ department of curriculum and instruction. Holt received several nominations for the award. One student wrote, “Throughout my journey with him as an instructor, advisor, and guidance through my research study and dissertation, he has forever remained caring beyond that of academia. We have spent many occasions sharing stories of our sons and their lives both in person, email, and phone. … His ability to bring alive the role of educational leadership inspired me to consider and pursue grater roles within education.”
