The University Recreation Club Sports program hosted its Second Annual Club Sports Clothing Drive in March and exceeded its goal of 750 pounds. Last year the clubs donated a total of 660 pounds and this year a total of 18 clubs donated 4,838.5 pounds of clothing, shoes and accessories. Clothes will be donated to LifeSource International, a local non-profit organization benefiting members of the Fayetteville community.

Of the clubs who competed, the Men’s Soccer club collected and donated the most clothes with a total of 1,394 pounds. The Ballroom/Latin Dance club came in a close second with 1,091.5 pounds. Here is the breakdown of how much each club donated:

  • Quidditch: 796.5 pounds
  • Women’s Rugby: 331 pounds
  • Cycling: 312.5 pounds
  • Water Ski: 112 pounds
  • Men’s Rugby: 100 pounds
  • Women’s Ultimate: 92.5 pounds
  • Triathlon / Baseball (tie): 90 pounds
  • Cricket: 78.5 pounds
  • Women’s Lacrosse: 75 pounds
  • Bowling: 64 pounds
  • Swim: 49.5 pounds
  • Paintball: 45 pounds
  • Women’s Volleyball: 23.5
  • Disc Golf: 17 pounds
  • Ice Hockey: 8 Pounds

Anonymous donors also donated a total of 68 pounds to the drive. All clubs were competing against one another to earn points based on weight that will earn them allocation money for the following year. The winning club, Men’s Soccer, was awarded an additional 10 points for winning the drive.

“Our personal goal as a club was to donate 1,000 pounds of clothes,” said Shawn Hohendorf, president of the Men’s Soccer club. “We partnered with a local NWA company and over the past month have been able to collect and donate 1,394 pounds. Men’s Soccer has pushed to become a bigger part of the community and by donating to LifeSource we are going to be able to positively affect hundreds of lives.”

The Clothing Drive is one of three program wide community service efforts. This academic year Club Sports donated 1,526 pounds of food to Full Circle Campus Food Pantry. The program also hosted a Blood Drive benefiting the Community Blood Center of the Ozarks and saw 83 donors. More information about these community service opportunities can be found on the Club Sports website, clubsports.uark.edu, and our Facebook page, www.facebook.com/ArkansasClubSports.
