Journalism Students Travel to Mississippi for Mark of Excellence Awards

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Ten students in the Walter J. Lemke department of journalism in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences will travel to Oxford, Miss., this week to receive Mark of Excellence Awards for their work.

The awards, given by Region 12 of the Society of Professional Journalists, will be presented at a ceremony during the Region 12 spring conference, April 5-7. The students will also learn the ranking of their work compared to others in the same category. First-place winners will advance to the national competition.

University of Arkansas students will receive a total of 12 awards, with Jimmy Carter and Whitney Green earning two awards each.

  • Whitney Green, Online Feature Reporting (Large): “Poets Compete in Fayetteville,” The Arkansas Traveler
  • Eddie Gregg, Feature Writing (Large): “An Arkansas DREAMer: One Man’s Journey,” The Arkansas Traveler
  • Sarah Guinn, Non-Fiction Magazine Article: “Beyond the Rubble: Surviving the Tornado,” The Arkansas Traveler Magazine
  • Tina Parker, Online Feature Reporting (Large): “Artist Channels Sobriety Through Career,” Lovely County Citizen
  • Caleb Rountree, Television General News Reporting: “Miss U of A DWI,” UATV

The Society of Professional Journalists has been one of the nation’s most well respected journalism organizations since its initiation in 1909. The professional association is dedicated to encouraging the free practice of journalism and stimulating high standards of ethical behavior through many endeavors, which include working to inspire and educate the next generation of journalists.
