Crosswalk Accident a Reminder to Use Caution Walking or Driving

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Two students were injured at about 8 a.m. Tuesday, March 26, when they were struck by a vehicle as they used the crosswalk at the intersection of Maple Street and Lindell Avenue. The driver of the vehicle was also a student. He had been driving eastward and told university police officers that he was blinded by the morning sun and didn’t see the two pedestrians. They were both taken to a local hospital for treatment. The driver was given a ticket for failing to yield to pedestrians in a crosswalk.

“This should be a reminder to everyone – whether you are walking or driving – you have to be careful at a crosswalk,” said UAPD Lt. Gary Crain. “Drivers are required by law to stop for pedestrians in a crosswalk – but accidents happen. Before you step into a crosswalk, as a pedestrian you should check the traffic – and stay alert while you’re crossing the street. If you see a car or truck approaching, make eye contact with the driver, make sure the driver isn’t distracted. When you’re in a crosswalk it’s not the time to check your phone or send a text.
