Guest Artist Lecture, Reception to Close Solo Exhibition
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Kenda North, professor and head of the photography program at the University of Texas at Arlington, will give a lecture at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 28, in room 213 of the Fine Arts Center. The talk will follow a closing reception for Submerged in the Fine Arts Center Gallery at 5:30 p.m.
Submerged, a solo exhibition of North’s photography, has been on display in the Fine Arts Center Gallery since March 4. It features images that study light and color beneath the water’s surface and the experience of being submerged.
According to North, PowerPoint images used in lectures about artwork “never look as fine as the original prints, and one has no idea of scale. It is always an honor to be able to discuss the work when the originals are also available for viewing by the audience.”
In her lecture, North will present an overview of her creative work from the past 30 years. She will also discuss artists who have influenced her.
“My work has been focused on the ‘figure’ through an on-going use of color in photography,” she said.
North has been featured in more than 40 solo and 100 group exhibitions both nationally and internationally. Her dye transfer work from the late ‘70s was recently included in a major exhibition and catalogue, Backyard Oasis: The Swimming Pool in Southern California Photography 1945-1982 at the Palm Spring Museum of Art.
She has received recognition for her teaching and advocacy, including Honored Educator for the Society for Photographic Education South Central Region in 2009 and Outstanding Volunteer of the Year in Education from the Volunteer Center of Dallas County in 2002.
Submerged may be viewed in the Fine Arts Center Gallery until 5 p.m. Friday, March 29.
