Juilliard Faculty to Teach, Perform With Music Students
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Trombonist Joseph Alessi will visit the University of Arkansas March 3-6 to perform in concert and to conduct a master class for students in the department of music in the J. William Fulbright college of Arts and Sciences.
Alessi has served as the principal trombonist with the New York Philharmonic since 1985 and currently teaches at The Julliard School. He has also served as second trombonist of the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Montreal Symphony.
During his visit, Alessi will perform with the Wind Symphony on March 4 and with the Wind Ensemble on March 5, both at the Walton Arts Center’s Baum Walker Concert Hall at 7:30 p.m. He will also teach private lessons, rehearse with both ensembles and hold a two-hour master class for music majors.
“With a world-class artist like Alessi sharing the stage with the band students, the performance is elevated so that students want to play their very best,” said W. Dale Warren, senior wind band conductor and professor of music. “The students are so excited to share a stage with someone of that caliber,” he said.
Alessi is the founder of the Summit Brass ensemble at the Rafael Mendez Brass Institute in Tempe, Arizona and in 2002 he was awarded an International Trombone Associated Award for his contributions to the world of trombone music and playing.
Alessi’s visit is sponsored by the department of music and the university bands.
