FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The University of Arkansas Press has published The Law of Falling Bodies by Elton Glaser, winner of the 2013 $5,000 Miller Williams Arkansas Poetry Prize. The 2013 finalists, also recently published, were Praise Nothing, by Joshua Robbins; and Chord Box, by Elizabeth Lindsey Rogers

The Law of Falling Bodies, which poet David Young called “rousing, heartbreaking, and unforgettable,” delves into the loss of a loved one and the changes that come with age. Glaser, the author of several books including Here and Hereafter through the University of Arkansas Press, was Distinguished Professor of English at the University of Akron for many years.

Praise Nothing, by Joshua Robbins, explores an elusive faith in suburban middle-class America. Poet Garrett Hongo calls Robbins’ first book, “a supple poetry of moral reflection and social responsibility.” Robbins is a lecturer in English at the University of Tennessee.

Chord Box, by Elizabeth Lindsey Rogers, is also a debut collection. Rogers envisions a world where each place is best known by its sound, and her poems often have music as their subject. Poet David Young called Chord Box a “truly remarkable first collection.” Rogers is an inaugural fellow at The Kenyon Review.

The University of Arkansas Press has been publishing poetry ever since Miller Williams became the press’s first director 30 years ago. In 2007, a benefit concert by his daughter, Lucinda Williams, made the endowment of a $5,000 annual award possible. Submissions for the poetry prize are accepted annually in September and October.
