This Week in the Visual and Performing Arts: November 8-15

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences will hold many events in the coming week including theater productions, concerts, art exhibitions and guest lectures. Students, faculty, staff and guests are encouraged to attend these on-campus and off-campus performances in the visual and performing arts.

Louise Bourgeois’ Topiary: The Art of Improving Nature exhibition may be seen in the Fine Arts Center Gallery from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on weekdays and from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays. The exhibition opened on Nov. 1 and will close on Thursday, Dec. 13.

Carol Krumhansl, professor of psychology at Cornell University, will give a guest lecture on the psychology of music at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 8, in Mullins Library room 104.

Schola Cantorum will perform at the Walton Arts Center on at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 8. Student tickets are $1 and tickets for the general public are $5.

The University of Arkansas Tuba and Euphonium Quartets also play at 7:30 on Thursday, Nov. 8. Their performance will be in the Fine Arts Center’s Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

Moon-Sook Park, assistant professor of music, will perform a faculty voice studio recital at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 9, in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.   

Blithe Spirit, a comic play by Noel Coward, will be performed at 8 p.m. on Nov. 9, 10 and 13-17 and at 2 p.m. on Nov. 11 and 18 in the Fine Arts Center’s University Theatre. Tickets are $16 for adults, $14 for faculty, staff and seniors, and $7 for children. Tickets for university students with a valid student I.D. are free on Wednesday and Thursday or $3 for other performances.

Andrew Jones will give a student tuba recital at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 10, in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

Evan Ballowe will perform a student saxophone recital at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 11, in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

Also on Sunday in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall, Catalina Ortega, instructor of music, will perform a faculty flute studio recital at 5 p.m.

Guest artist Ayse Taspinar will perform a piano recital at 8 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 11, in Old Main’s Giffels Auditorium. The internationally acclaimed pianist and musicologist will speak on “Rediscovering the Shared Cultural Heritage of Armenians and Turks through Music” on Tuesday, Nov. 13 at 12:30 p.m. in Old Main, room 208.

The Master Chorale’s fall concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 12, in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall. The concert will feature choruses, lieder and chamber music by Franz Schubert with a full performance of his Mass in G Major.

The University of Arkansas Saxophone Ensemble will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 13, in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

Benjamin Pierce, associate professor of music, will give a faculty tuba and euphonium studio recital at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 14, in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.
