Sororities and fraternities are being challenged to make a change by promoting an eco-efficient lifestyle. Greeks Going Green, or G3, is a registered student organization on campus, made of more than 45 student leaders. It promotes environmental awareness and sustainability within the Greek community.

“The entire Greek community is encouraged to recycle as a way to work together to make the university more sustainable,” said Ryan Renard, president of Greeks Going Green.  “Monthly, G3 meets to focus on small changes chapters and its members should take that would lead to a big difference for our community as a whole.”

Since the beginning of the fall semester, G3 has distributed flyers, educational materials, and recycle bins to select chapters.

“Strategically, we are hoping to take this initiative to the next level within the community,” said Todd Jenkins, assistant director of Greek Life.

During the first week of the program more than 50 pounds of potential waste was collected by a third party collection group, Green Rhythm. In addition, G3 received a donation of 40 plastic recycling containers from Pepsi Co.

“These bins represent one example of Pepsi’s commitment to the University’s sustainability initiatives. We are pleased that the Greek community stepped forward to take advantage of Pepsi’s resources,” said Lynn Williams, executive director of business services, for Student Affairs.

Renard agreed with Williams. “We are very proud of this accomplishment and are looking forward to our partnership with PepsiCo,” said Renard.
