University Recreation is partnering with the Center for Educational Access to host special events to increase awareness about Disability Awareness month.

The Inclusive Obstacle Course will be held on Monday, Oct. 8, in Gym 2 of the Health, Physical Education and Recreation Building from 6 to 8 p.m. The purpose of the event is to raise awareness for wheel chair users. The course will consist of a maze, ramp, basketball shot, and a tunnel that leads to the finish line. A prize will be awarded to the wheel chair user who makes it through the obstacle course the fastest. There will be a wheel chair for able-body participants to test out the obstacle course. A beep ball demo will also be set up for participants to try. Beep ball is similar to baseball but is modified for people who are visually impaired. Free food will be provided for all participants.

The 3 Mile Ability Roll N’ Walk Run will be held on Thursday, Oct. 11, at Wilson Park from 5 to 7 p.m. Participants may register for free onsite at 5 p.m. or pre-register here. The run will begin at 5:30 p.m. All participants will receive a free T-shirt.

Back by popular demand, Goalball will be held on Monday, Nov. 12, at Gym 1 in the HPER Building. Goalball is a game played 3 on 3 where all participants are blindfolded and roll a ball with a bell inside of it into the opponent’s goal. No pre-registration is necessary.

“We are very excited about the variety of events offered this year, as well as the vast support and collaboration provided by our campus and community partners,” said Laura James, assistant director for the Center for Educational Access. “Our goal is to bring attention to some of the challenges people with disabilities encounter, while encouraging everyone to do their part in promoting equality and inclusion.”

A grand prize of an Xbox360 Console with Kinect will be awarded to the current student who attends the most events by completing a Disability Awareness Month event passport. For information about the passport visit, http://cea.uark.edu/dam.php.
