Dream B.I.G. Student Coordinator Application Deadline Extended

Applications for student coordinator for Alternative Service Break: Dream B.I.G. (Believing in Girls) 2013 are now available. The deadline to apply is Friday, Sept. 28.

Dream B.I.G. is a girl empowerment mentoring program that gives students the opportunity to devote their fall, winter, and spring breaks to service with teenage girls from the Arkansas Delta. Dream B.I.G. seeks to expose the girls to an area of the state that is geographically and economically diverse with an emphasis in the arts and higher education, and establish meaningful mentoring relationships between them and U of A students. Camp programming addresses self-esteem, goal-setting, team work, pursuit of higher education and motivation to succeed and overcome challenges.

Dream B.I.G. 2013 Student Coordinators are responsible for creating and implementing the Dream B.I.G. Alternative Service Break spring break overnight camp under the supervision of the Center for Community Engagement Program Coordinator and the Dream B.I.G. Intern. Students are needed to coordinate program logistics, training and assessment, social media and public relations, and camp curriculum. These are paid positions with the Volunteer Action Center Alternative Service Breaks program. Student Coordinators are also required to attend the fall and winter Dream B.I.G. trips in their entirety.

Dream B.I.G. 2012 in Fayetteville consisted of 30 female student mentors facilitating an overnight spring break camp at Mount Sequoyah for 42 seventh-twelfth grade girls from Marvell High School of the Arkansas Delta. Mentor relationships were established by dividing the mentors into small groups to allow for individual attention and trust-building. The Dream B.I.G. Student Mentors partnered with community and campus resources to expose Marvell High School girls to a wide range of opportunities including visits to the Donald W. Reynolds Boys & Girls Club, the University of Arkansas, and Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. Mentors logged a total of 3,184 service hours and made an economic impact of $69,379.36 as they planned, prepared for, and implemented Dream B.I.G. 2012.
