University Professor Teaches Database Course in Vietnam
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – David E. Douglas, University Professor of information systems in the Sam M. Walton College of Business at the University of Arkansas, served as a visiting professor this summer at the University of Information Technology, Vietnam National University, HCMC (Ho Chi Minh City).
Douglas taught a two-week database course to 37 of the Vietnam university’s students. Topics covered in the course included enhanced entity relationship diagrams, logical database design, physical data design, the SQL programming language, data warehousing, data quality and database administration.
The course allowed the students to access the Enterprise Systems database platforms—IBM, Microsoft and Teradata—hosted by the University of Arkansas. “These systems allow students worldwide access to enterprise level database, data warehousing and business intelligence hardware, software and large datasets,” Douglas said. Douglas is the director of Enterprise Systems for the Walton College.
Douglas has visited Vietnam six times since 2008 and assisted in the development of a memorandum of understanding between the Walton College and Vietnam National University, HCMC. He also taught two one-week courses in Vietnam: a course in business intelligence in March 2010 and a course in enterprise systems in November 2010.
