The J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences has announced that the department of chemistry and biochemistry will add Susanne Striegler as an associate professor this fall.

Striegler has edited one book, authored two book chapters and published 27 peer-reviewed journal articles. Her work is supported by a CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation since 2008, which will continue at the University of Arkansas.

“In Dr. Striegler, the department has found a wonderful, well-rounded hire,” said Bob Gawley, distinguished professor of chemistry and chair of the department. “Her world-class scholarship, passion for teaching and international experiences exemplify the qualities Fulbright College looks for in its professors.”

Striegler comes to the University of Arkansas from Auburn University, where she has worked since 2004, earning tenure and promotion in 2009. During her years at Auburn, Striegler taught a variety of classes, from survey courses for non-science majors to advanced graduate courses. She also served on numerous committees and as chair of both the organic division (2009-2010) and departmental seminars committee (2009-2012).

“I’m looking forward to coming to the University of Arkansas,” said Striegler. “The faculty and students have been so positive, and I’m excited about becoming part of the chemistry and biochemistry department.”

In addition to her classroom and administrative duties, Striegler has coordinated and supervised numerous outreach programs for students and teachers of all grade levels to promote the merits of learning and teaching chemistry, giving lectures and performing demonstrations to help foster interest in the subject.

Striegler is honorary member in the Golden Key International Honor Society since 2008 and was selected as 2007 Outstanding Faculty Member of the College of Sciences and Mathematics by Auburn University’s Student Government Association.

She has been an invited speaker at universities across the southern United States and has presented her work at numerous conferences in the U.S. and Europe.

Striegler earned a vordiplom (bachelor of science, 1989) and diplom (master of science,1993) in chemistry from Ulm University in Germany. She continued her education at Ulm, receiving her doctorate in organic chemistry (1995). In 2003, Striegler defended her post-doctoral research at the interface of material science, chemical engineering and chemistry to earn a habilitation with venia legendi in inorganic chemistry, a degree earned through a period of intense independent research and publication.
