Houa Xiong is March’s Student Leader of the Month. He is from Summers, Ark., and is a double major in communication and drama. He is actively involved with Lambda Pi Eta, Hmong Student Organization of Arkansas, Lao American Organization, Student Support Service, and Student Organization Outreach and Involvement Experience.

He became involved with the Hmong Student Organization of Arkansas because they started out as an organization that expresses cultural awareness through friendship and bonding. The Lao American Organization happily promotes their culture through food and tasty workshops, which is a great way to meet new people. Student Support Services helps low incoming and unique individuals by focusing on academic excellence, mentorship, personal growth, social events, and competitive incentives. The LPH, in addition to the emphases of academia, professionalization, and connections with the communications department, resonated to him as an organizational phenomenon.

He was a common member, but was thinking heavily on the longevity of LPH, so he took the presidency to study the organization.

The Student Leader of the Month award recognizes a University of Arkansas undergraduate student for their excellence in leadership through campus involvement leadership activities or through volunteer and community service programs. If you are interested in nominating a student leader, nomination forms are available at http://nsfp.uark.edu/4483.php.   All nomination forms should be submitted to Dare Chronister, program assistant for the New Student and Family Programs, Arkansas Union Room A688 or via e-mail at ldchroni@uark.edu by the first Friday of each month.
