Global Campus Educator Speaks at Regional Human Resource Conference in Springdale

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Judith Tavano, professional development coordinator at the University of Arkansas Global Campus, will present a program at the Arkansas Society for Human Resource Management conference April 25 in Springdale about the struggle Generation X faces when competing with older and younger generations.

Tavano’s program, “Y Not X: A Cautionary Tale for 21st Century Leadership,” will explain why leadership opportunities will elude Generation X. Tavano is known in local and national human resource communities as an expert in workplace generational diversity.

“It’s an unsettling story, but it’s a story those of us who study human resources have to consider,” Tavano said. “It’s a numbers game.”

Generation X, people born from 1965 to 1980, is smaller by half than either the boomer or the Y generation, and is being squeezed from both ends, Tavano said. Boomers, born between 1946 and 1964, are staying in the work world longer and Y’s,  those born from 1981-2000, are coming in at such a rapid pace that Generation X is stuck in the middle, in many cases with seemingly nowhere to go.

“It’s time for solutions,” Tavano said. She will offer possible solutions during her presentation.

Participants can register for the human resources conference, April 25 through 27, at http://www.hr2012.org/.

Tavano recently presented “Coaching Up, Down and Sideways in a Multi-Generational Workplace” to the Siloam Springs Chamber of Commerce Human Resource Roundtable, and she will present a variation of the same program “Managing Up, Down and Sideways in a Multi-Generational Workplace” to Benton County Leadership in May. In August, Tavano will examine the impact of anticipated retirement numbers on the agriculture industry at the 10th National AgCareers Roundtable scheduled this year at Tyson Foods in Springdale.

Tavano received the Society for Human Resource Northwest Arkansas Chapter Pillar Award in 2011 for developing innovative, online continuing education offerings.
