Students to Hold March to Protest Trayvon Martin Slaying
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The University of Arkansas National Pan-Hellenic Council and the Black Student Association will host a “Shining Light on Injustice” awareness march on Monday, April 2, at 11:45 a.m.
People attending the march are asked to wear hoodies in honor of Trayvon Martin, a 17-year-old African American high school student who was shot and killed in Sanford, Fla., on Feb. 26, reportedly by George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch captain. There have been numerous rallies and petition drives across the country in support of Martin, questioning the way the investigation has been handled and calling for justice in the case.
“This is an opportunity for the Northwest Arkansas community to rally together to put an end to injustice,” said Philip Lambey, president of the National Pan-Hellenic Council.
The short march will begin at Brough Commons cafeteria and will end on the Union Mall. A short program will follow the march, featuring Charles Robinson, vice provost for diversity affairs, who will address the issue of injustice in America.
“Injustice has plagued our country for centuries. Most people experience some sort of injustice at some point in their life, no matter your race, ethnicity, gender, social status or geographic location,” said Nehemiah Stephens, committee chair and a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc.
Lambey added, “We must continue to fight injustices not just in this situation with Trayvon Martin but in every case where justice is not served.”
