Honors Student Publishes Article in ScienceWriters Magazine

Ameé Jeanette Salois, a senior physics and English major in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences and member of the Honors College, has made a first step toward a career in science writing. She has published an article in ScienceWriters, the magazine of the National Association of Science Writers.

Her article, “Don’t Say Die: Selling the Story,” shares some of the challenges faced by freelance writers in placing stories, and how they overcame them, as discussed in a session at the Science Writers 2011 workshop in Flagstaff, Ariz.

Salois was one of 10 writers selected from throughout the nation to receive a National Association of Science Writers travel fellowship, which helped defray travel expenses to the workshop. As part of the fellowship, Salois was required to report on a session. Hers was among those selected for publication, with the further honor of being the lead story in the section.

As she wraps up work on her double major this semester, Salois is considering her options, which include graduate work in museum education and possibly, more hand’s on experiences such as the internship at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum that she completed last summer. Most recently an editorial assistant for the Honors College, Salois has begun a new internship with the International Dark Sky Association, where she will have the opportunity to raise awareness on the impact of light pollution.
