University Recreation Intramural Sports Program Sees Success at Regional Tournament
Scott Nguyen and Cody Few were selected as two of the top three intramural sports officials in the region at the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) National Campus Championship Series Flag Football tournament in Carbondale, Ill.
Student flag football officials are evaluated after every game throughout the year and are ranked on a scale from 1-5. The officials work on their skills and areas of improvement during the year.
Nguyen and Few were given bids to travel to Texas A&M to officiate the NIRSA NCCS National Flag Football tournament on January 4. They have been officials for University Recreation since 2009.
“Scott and Cody worked hard to perfect the craft of officiating,” said Seth Davis, graduate assistant for University Recreation Intramural Sports. “Being an authoritative figure among peers is not something that is easy to do, but these two guys excel at it. We are very proud and appreciative of their hard work.”
Two UREC Intramural Sports players were also recognized at the NCCS regional tournament. Wide receiver Victor “Reese” Moore and quarterback Grant Gaines were chosen for the All Tournament Flag Football team. Moore and Gaines were selected as two of the top six best players in the entire tournament.
The Arkansas men’s flag football team, Texas Hurt, placed second out of fourteen teams from across the country. Texas Hurt lost 28-26 to the two time defending national champions. The team will be playing in the National Championship Tournament being held at Texas A&M University.
