Soil Science Society to Honor Tommy Daniel

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Tommy Daniel, professor emeritus of crop, soil and environmental sciences at the University of Arkansas, will be presented the 2011 Soil Science Distinguished Service Award at the Soil Science Society of America annual meeting Oct. 18 in San Antonio.

A soil scientist in the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture and Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences, Daniel played a key role in identifying the potential for phosphorus in rainwater runoff from fields where animal manure was applied as fertilizer to affect surface water quality. He and his colleagues presented legislative briefings and assisted the Natural Resources Conservation Service and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in incorporating phosphorus in manure management policy.

Daniel served as chair and in other leadership positions in the society's division for Soil and Water Management Conservation. His career has focused on the effects of agriculture practices on water quality and on developing practices to minimize problems shown to exist.

After receiving a doctorate in soil science from the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Daniel taught at the School of Agriculture in Ibadan, Nigeria, for two years. He was a member of the University of Wisconsin faculty from 1968 until 1989 when he joined the University of Arkansas faculty. He retired in 2009.
