Ballroom Dance, Latin Dance, Swim Lessons, Capoeira, and American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED are just a few of the not-for-credit classes offered by University Recreation during the fall 2011 semester. Through these instructional programs, UREC aims to introduce participants to recreational activities that can be performed for exercise, socialization, relaxation and fun throughout the lifetime. Most classes contain both physical and instructional components, and are socially oriented.

Latin Dance, Ballroom Dance and Swing Dance reflect recent and renewed interest in dance forms, as well as offer multicultural experiences for participants. Although many participants enjoy registering as a pair, a partner is not required. For a more unique dance experience, try Capoeria on Tuesday nights from Sept. 13 through Nov. 15.  Capoeria is a Brazilian art form that combines martial arts, music and dance, and is being offered as a free program.

Aquatics programs offered by University Recreation include Adult and Youth Swim Lessons, designed for beginning swimmers who desire basic swimming skills such as breath-holding, floating and basic arm and leg stroke combinations. Children registering for youth swim lessons must be part of a HPER family membership, and must be ages five through twelve. Children 13 years and older may be registered for Adult Swim Lessons. Adult Lap Swim is offered for more advanced swimmers age 13 and over who are looking for stroke refinement and aquatic fitness.

For new or apprehensive exercisers, Fitness U is an instructional program designed to help participants become more familiar with utilizing the exercise equipment available in the Health, Physical Education and Recreation Building to build effective workouts. Featured topics include basic exercise principles, HPER Fitness Center orientations, and introductions to strength and cardiovascular training.

Finally, University Recreation is proud to continue its role as an American Red Cross Authorized Provider for First Aid, CPR and AED certification classes. These classes enhance the well-being of the entire campus and community by increasing the number of trained emergency responders. Pricing for these classes is competitive and consistent with other American Red Cross providers.

Red Cross certification courses are open to registration by the general public, and do not require HPER memberships or guest pass procedures. All other classes are open to registration by students and HPER members only. Non-members may register with current HPER members by following guest pass procedures for each class attended. A complete schedule of session dates, class days and times, and session costs can be viewed at the University Recreation website. To register for any of these Instructional Programs, please visit the HPER membership office in HPER 225.
