Engineering Professor to Chair International Periodicals Committee
The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Technical Activities Board has elected Samir El-Ghazaly, Distinguished Professor of electrical engineering, as the chair of the IEEE Periodicals Committee.
IEEE is an international professional organization that focuses on electrical engineering, electronics, computer engineering and related fields. The largest technical society in the world, IEEE publishes more than 140 academic journals and trade and technical magazines. The periodicals committee oversees these publications, sets the IEEE publication strategies and policies and evaluates and approves new journal proposals.
“IEEE’s journals and periodicals are the most prestigious in the field of electrical and electronics engineering,” said Ashok Saxena, dean of the College of Engineering. “Dr. El-Ghazaly’s election to the position of Chair of the Periodicals Committee speaks volumes for his reputation in IEEE; this is wonderful for the department of electrical engineering, the College of Engineering and the University of Arkansas.”
El-Ghazaly was elected by IEEE presidents and directors, and he explained that his position requires awareness of current and future technological directions in the field of electrical and computer engineering, because the types of publications produced by IEEE is tied to these trends. Initiating a new journal could even impact the direction of research by signaling the significance or potential of a certain area.
El-Ghazaly holds the Twenty-First Century Leadership Chair in Engineering at the University of Arkansas.
