Human Resources Course Offers Conflict Resolution Tips

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Human resource professionals can learn more about conflict resolution in the workplace and gain continuing education credit at a workshop from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 19, at the University of Arkansas Sam M. Walton College of Business.

The university Global Campus (School of Continuing Education and Academic Outreach) and Walton College collaborated to offer this professional development course, which will provide mediation strategies used to resolve workplace disputes. The course was approved by the Human Resource Certification Institute for 2.75 hours of general credit toward recertification.

Arthur T. Mathews, who holds a Juris Doctor and is a visiting professor at Walton College, will offer professionals the opportunity to “drop in to” college for a specially packaged, 3-hour session of his summer course, Alternative Dispute Resolution. The workshop — Conflict Uncorked: Mediation, Dispute Resolution, Employee Relations and the Impact of Laws and Legislation on the Successful Resolution of Conflict in Organizations — will focus on strategies and best practices for resolving disputes within organizations.

Matthews is a negotiator, mediator, arbitrator and organizational consultant/trainer in the field of conflict resolution. He also serves on the faculty at both New York University and the Cornell University School of Industrial and Labor Relations.

“Conflict resolution is a growth industry and best-in-class thought leaders must acquire the skills needed to decompress and reduce conflict in employee relations and provide innovative solutions for recalibrating how laws and legislation impact the conflict portfolio,” Matthews said.

Judith Tavano, coordinator of professional development programs at the Global Campus, said this collaboration benefits both professionals and students.

“This is a win-win for all concerned,” Tavano said. “HR professionals get a chance to learn from a distinguished member of the Sam M. Walton College of Business faculty in his own environment, and, at the same time, the students who usually populate Dr. Matthews’ class will have opportunity to network with local working HR professionals.”

Online registration is open. For information please contact Tavano at jtavano@uark.edu or visit the professional development page of the Global Campus website.
