FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Anastasia Thyroff, a University of Arkansas doctoral student in the marketing and logistics department of the Sam M. Walton College of Business, has been selected to receive a 2011-12 Philanthropic Educational Organization Scholar Award.

The scholarship will support Thyroff’s continued research efforts related to consumer acceptance of nanotechnology. Thyroff is a Distinguished Doctoral Fellow at the university and holds a bachelor’s degree from Clemson University and a master’s degree from the University of Georgia. During her first year in the Graduate School, a paper she coauthored was accepted for publication by the Journal of Consumer Affairs, and two others were accepted for presentation by the American Marketing Association’s conference on marketing and public policy.

P.E.O. Scholar Award recipients are chosen by a competitive selection process. There are approximately 6,000 chapters worldwide; each chapter is allowed to nominate one candidate. The P.E.O. Scholar Awards Board of Trustees met in March to select the 2011-12 scholars from the 667 nominations they received. Eighty-five scholars were selected. In the incoming class of scholars, there are 63 Doctor of Philosophy candidates across many varied fields; 17 scholars are seeking professional degrees in law, medicine, dentistry or music; and five are pursuing postdoctoral research.

These new scholars represent 32 states, three provinces, and one district. They are studying in 26 states, three provinces and one foreign country. Three applicants from the state of Arkansas will receive scholarships, one currently at Harvard and one at Stanford.

P.E.O. is one of the pioneer societies for promoting educational opportunities for women, with almost a quarter of a million members in chapters in the United States and Canada.
