41st Annual History Awards Program and Phi Alpha Theta Initiation

On Thursday, May 5, the history department will give away over $47,000 (a record amount) in awards, scholarships and fellowships at this year’s Phi Alpha Theta initiation and awards ceremony. Phi Alpha Theta, a history honors society with over 350,000 members worldwide, was founded on the University of Arkansas campus on March 17, 1921, and is now the largest college honor society devoted to a single discipline, with 820 chapters in the U.S. and three other countries.

For students in the history discipline, there are over 20 different prizes, in a wide array of categories, for which you could qualify. Have a financial need? There’s a scholarship for that. Are you a veteran or the spouse or child of a veteran? There’s an award for that. Is your main area of interest Asia or the Middle East, ancient history, African-American history, or Arkansas history? There are awards for each of those. There are even a couple of awards which fund faculty to travel for research or conferences. All of these and more will be awarded, and one thing is certain—if it weren’t for the generosity of the donors, which range from former students and faculty to a famous basketball player, none of these awards would be possible.
