Postage Rates Changed April 17

The United States Postal Service raised postage rates on April 17. The 44-cent price of a first-class stamp did not change, but heavier letters cost more. The price for the first ounce stays at 44 cents, but the price for each extra ounce rose from 17 cents to 20 cents.

Last summer the post office sought an increase that would have raised the price of first class stamps, citing the unusual business conditions of the recession. That was rejected by the independent Postal Regulatory Commission. The United States Postal Service expects to raise rates annually in mid-April.

Other rates that changed on April 17:

• There will be a variety of price changes for other mailing services, including advertising mail, periodicals and packages.
• Letters to Canada or Mexico increased to 80 cents, from 75 cents to Canada and 79 cents to Mexico.
• Letters to other international destinations will remain unchanged at 98 cents.
• Express Mail and Priority Mail prices are not affected.
• Post cards up by a penny to 29 cents.
