An architectural rendering of the satellite fitness facility proposed for the Arkansas Union.

The University of Arkansas plans to open a satellite fitness facility in the Arkansas Union this fall. The campus community can learn about the plans at informational sessions this month.

The department of intramural and recreational sports will operate the facility in addition to its main facility in the Health, Physical Education and Recreation Building. The university's Division of Finance and Administration and the department of facilities management are helping to establish the satellite facility, which will be part of the College of Education and Health Professions. The facility is tentatively scheduled to open in August and will follow similar membership guidelines to the HPER facility.

The new fitness facility will occupy the second floor space that was vacated by the University of Arkansas Bookstore (the lower floor of the old bookstore). The planned facility will feature almost 6,000 square feet of fitness floor space, a 1,500-square-foot group exercise room, and men’s and women’s locker and shower facilities.

Intramural and recreational sports has planned drop-in information sessions at the HPER Building and Arkansas Union to allow students, staff and faculty the chance to preview the design of the facility and learn about the available features and equipment.

The sessions:

  • April 13, 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m., Arkansas Union Connections Lounge
  • April 19, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m., HPER Building, outside Donna Axum Fitness Center
  • April 19, 4:30-5:30 p.m., HPER Building, outside Donna Axum Fitness Center
  • April 20, 5:30-6:30 p.m., ARKU Connections Lounge
  • April 27, 5:30-7 p.m., HPER Building, outside Donna Axum Fitness Center

A naming contest is also planned to provide the university community the opportunity to suggest names for the facility.
