Peer Safety Project Seeks Mentors
Undergraduate students can earn three hours of course credit by mentoring an elementary school student twice a week.
The Peer Safety Project, directed by Timothy Cavell, is currently recruiting undergraduate mentors for the fall semester. Mentors eat lunch and talk with an elementary school student twice each week. In return, mentors receive 3 hours of course credit in addition to valuable experience.
To become a mentor, a student is required to: enroll in PSYC 207V; undergo a background check; have reliable transportation to and from the elementary school; be available for at least 90 minutes twice a week, at anytime between 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Students do not need to be psychology majors to enroll as a mentor.
PSYC 207V does not meet regularly like a traditional class since the actual mentoring counts as class time. The class does, however, have a course syllabus, class readings, and paper assignments. Mentors will receive a grade at the end of the semester based on attendance and completion of assignments. Mentors can be from any major and class standing.
