University Computing Lab PrintSmart Quota Implemented

Most students will not be affected by the new PrintSmart quota system being implemented in June. Last year, 70 percent of students were responsible for only 22 percent of the overall printing. The new quota will reduce excessive printing by the minority of students (30 percent) who were responsible for the majority of printing (78 percent).

The Student Technology Fee Review Committee, made up primarily of students, approved PrintSmart as a way to reduce unnecessary and excessive printing in the General Access Computing Labs (GACLs) at the University of Arkansas.

Beginning in mid-June, every user who pays a Student Technology Fee is assigned the same quota which is equivalent to 700 single-sided black toner pages, or the value of $35 in any combination of the following:

  • Laser printer, black, single-sided, 5 cents per page
  • Laser printer, black, double-sided, 8 cents per page

  • Color printer, single-sided, 20 cents per page

When students print in a General Access Computing Lab or a participating public or academic lab, the PrintSmart quota will be displayed in a pop-up window after sending a document to the printer and again at the print release station. If a student's quota is exceeded, he or she must swipe the University ID card at the release station to pay from a Razorbucks account or use a copy card.
