University Sets Dates For Public Forums To Discuss Campus Transportation Plan

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Vehicular, pedestrian and bicycle circulation on the University of Arkansas campus will be the topic of upcoming public meetings. All students, staff and faculty members, and other interested citizens are encouraged to attend the forum from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday, May 1, in the auditorium of Vol Walker Hall (WALK 103). An additional public forum, specifically intended to collect student comments and accommodate student schedules, will be conducted earlier the same day from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Arkansas Union theater. All are welcome at both meetings.

The transportation plan will advance and refine the transportation elements of the campus master plan prepared for the University by Sasaki Associates and adopted in 1998. The plan objective is to provide a roadway system within and adjacent to the campus that provides an acceptable level of service for both vehicles and pedestrians, realizing that within the core of the campus the concentration will be upon the movement of pedestrians. The transportation system will need to be compatible with Razorback Transit System and could accommodate a future bike path system.

Transportation consultants with Walker Parking Consultants will be at the forum to present information and answer questions.

Walker’s services will include the following transportation planning objectives:

  • determine the vehicular and pedestrian circulation goals and objectives
  • determine existing traffic problems and recommend appropriate improvements
  • determine the traffic impact of the future building program and recommend phased improvements
  • determine the cost of the transportation improvements

The University of Arkansas’ transportation plan will be coordinated with the campus master plan enhancing the overall transportation experience and operation on campus.

This is the second round of meetings and public hearings held by Walker on the Fayetteville campus. The consultants will schedule additional campus visits as needed until the plan is completed later this year.
