FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The University of Arkansas will host a lecture and performance on the history of women composers in jazz music by Chancellor Tom George and Barbara Harbarch of the University of Missouri-St. Louis at 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 2 in Giffels Auditorium, located in Old Main. The public and media are invited to attend.

In addition to his duties as chancellor, George is a distinguished professor of chemistry and a renowned jazz pianist. Harbarch is a professor of music at UM-St. Louis. Musical America magazine has called her “nothing short of brilliant” and Gramophone has cited her as an “acknowledged interpreter -- and, indeed, muse -- of modern harpsichord music.”

Harbarch will provide a lecture on women jazz composers, and George will be accompanied by Jim Greeson, UA professor of music, as the two perform selected pieces.

 “This is such a wonderful opportunity for the University of Arkansas community,” said Bob Smith, provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs. “Not only will we be exposed to an informative lecture from someone as respected as Barbara Harbarch, we will also be enlightened by the remarkable musical talents of Thomas George and our own Jim Greeson.”
