UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS STUDENT COLLAPSES DURING ARMY ROTC TRAINING EXERCISE

FAYETTEVILLE, ARK. - A student from the University of Arkansas, collapsed and died Sunday morning while participating in an Army ROTC training exercise at Wentworth Military Academy, Lexington, Mo.

Scott K. Powell,19, a freshman from Little Rock, Ark., was a member of the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville Army ROTC program and a member of the Arkansas National Guard. His team was participating in a 10-kilometer road march when he became ill and collapsed. Medical technicians were on the scene within minutes of the incident and provided immediate first aid until he was transported to a Lexington, Mo., hospital.

An autopsy is underway to determine cause of death. In keeping with common practice when there is a loss of life, the Army is also conducting an investigation. Additional information will be provided, as it becomes available.

A campus memorial service for Powell will be held at the Wesley Foundation Campus Ministry building, 730 Maple, on Thursday, Nov. 4 at 1:30 p.m.

A funeral service will be held at Pulaski Heights Methodist Church on Friday at 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Pinecrest Cemetery in Alexander. A chartered bus will depart from the UA Army ROTC Building, Maple and Leverett, Friday, Nov. 5 at 7:30 for those desiring to attend the funeral services. Ruble Funeral Home of Little Rock is in charge of the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Scott K. Powell Memorial ROTC Scholarship Fund. Checks should be payable the University of Arkansas Foundation, University Development Office, 200 Hotz Hall, Fayetteville, Ark. 72701.
