UA ENROLLMENT POSTS LARGEST ENROLLMENT ON RECORD AT 15,795

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - University of Arkansas Fall 2001 enrollment has hit a high mark in the history of the institution. Total fall enrollment for 2001-2002 is 15,795. The second largest enrollment on record is from 1980 at 15,604.

This fall’s enrollment represents a continued growth trend over the past five years, and is a 2.6 percent increase over last year’s enrollment of 15,396.

"The University of Arkansas is making impressive strides in strengthening the size, diversity and quality of the student body," said University of Arkansas Chancellor John A. White. "We have made incremental increases in the size of our student body. Recruitment and retention of our students will continue to be our main priority, hence strengthening the University."

Enrollment is up in most categories including the critical growth areas of undergraduate and graduate enrollment as well as diversity. Total undergraduate degree seeking enrollment is up 2.6 percent, increasing to 12,501 from 12,180 last year and up from 11,999 fall of 1999-2000. In addition, there are 358 non-degree seeking undergraduates.

Degree-seeking graduate enrollment is 2,394 up 4.7 percent, from 2,287 last fall and 2,259 the year before. In addition there are 167 non-degree seeking graduate students enrolled this fall. Gains in this category were made in both the masters enrollment, up to 1,669 from 1,586; and doctoral enrollments up to 706 from 676.

"We continue to show significant progress in increasing our graduate enrollment, which is key to ensuring that our state can compete economically," White said. "We again posted major gains in research funding this past year, which will further enhance our graduate programs and thus stimulate continued growth in this vital area."

Total new freshman enrollment is 2,409, up 2.6 percent. Degree-seeking freshman enrollment is 2,332 up 2.1 percent. Overall freshman retention remains unchanged at 81.7 percent.

The proportion of entering freshmen who were in the top 10 percent of their graduating class is 35 percent. This is an increase from 32 percent last year. The average high school grade-point-average of entering freshmen is 3.54, up from 3.52 last fall.

Students coming to the University from Arkansas were up 2.1 percent from 12,963 to 13,230. Out-of-state students accounted for 1,642 students, up 1.9 percent from 1,611.

Overall diversity of the student body made gains in most categories.

"We are making every effort to improve diversity at the University of Arkansas, but as I said in my State-of-the-University address, progress toward achieving increased diversity is nowhere near where it needs to be," White said.

"These gains indicate we are making progress overall, but we must increase our efforts, particularly in attracting African American students to our University," White added. "The more the University of Arkansas reflects the demographic profile of the state, the better we serve the people of Arkansas."

  • African American enrollment increased to 980, up 1.6 percent from 965 last fall.
  • American Indian enrollment increased to 320, up 4.2 percent from 307 last fall.
  • Latino or Hispanic enrollment increased to 232, up 4 percent from 223 last fall.
  • International enrollment increased to 923, up 12.3 percent from 822 last fall.
  • Asian or Pacific Islander decreased to 406, down 1.5 percent from 412 last fall.
