Northwest Arkansas community recommits to the dream of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Fayetteville, Arkansas — "Finding your place in the dream: Remembrance, reflection, recommitment" is the message that members of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Planning Committee, along with other members of the Northwest Arkansas community will convey during the 6th annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. "Days of Recommitment" celebration, Jan.18-24, 2002. Special events will be held in honor of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. These events will highlight the achievements and sacrifices of Dr. King. The public is invited to attend all programs.

MLK Reflection Program- St. James Baptist Church, 7 p.m.
This event will be hosted by the Northwest Arkansas Planning Committee. This program will highlight several leaders in the community who will reflect on their experiences during the time in which Dr. King was actively involved in the Civil Rights Movement and how Dr. King directly affected the Northwest Arkansas community.

King Team — Community Service Project, 9 a.m.
A service project will be sponsored by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Other participants will include a variety of fraternities, sororities, student organizations, and members of the NWA community. This group will offer transportation for the elderly. This event is designed to encourage all citizens to perform community service projects throughout Northwest Arkansas.
MLK Praise Celebration Program — Life Harvester Church, 6 p.m.
This event will be hosted by the Northwest Arkansas Planning Committee. This program will feature area choirs and choral groups. This event is designed to promote harmony within the Northwest Arkansas community.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Service — St. James Baptist Church, 4 p.m.
This event is hosted by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. The speaker will be the Rev. Logan C. Hampton, Pastor of the Reed Memorial CME Church in Little Rock. He is also the director of the Donaghey Student Center at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock This day is dedicated to encourage ceremonies to commemorate to Dr. King’s birthday by promoting racial harmony, understanding, respect and goodwill among all people.

MLK March — Walton Arts Center Parking Lot, 11:15 a.m.
This event is sponsored by the Northwest Arkansas MLK Planning Committee, the Black Students Association and the Associated Student Government of the University of Arkansas. The march will start at the Walton Arts Center parking lot, marching on a designated path to the Peace fountain at the University of Arkansas.

This event is sponsored by the Black Students Association and the Associated Student Government of the University of Arkansas.
Recommitment Banquet — Arkansas Union, University of Arkansas, 7 p.m.
This event will be hosted by the Northwest Arkansas Martin Luther King, Jr. Planning Committee. The featured speaker will be Linda Pondexter-Chesterfield of Little Rock, Arkansas. In addition, individuals from the Northwest Arkansas community will be honored for outstanding community service. Ticket costs are $20 for adults and $10 for students (this includes K-12 students and undergraduate students).

Dr. Martin L. King, Jr. Celebration - Arkansas Union Theater, University of Arkansas, 7 p.m.
This event will be coordinated by the University of Arkansas Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Planning Committee. The featured speaker will be Dr. Linda Reed from the University of Houston. Dr. Reed is an associate professor of History and also served three three-year terms as the director of the University of Houston's African American Studies Program. She is a highly recognized scholar in the field of African American history and has written several books concentrating on the forgotten years of the civil rights movement.

UA Multicultural Center Re-Opening Program - Arkansas Union (4th Floor), University of Arkansas, 2 p.m.
This event will be hosted by the Office of Multicultural Student Services at the University of Arkansas. The special guests include Mr. Ozell Sutton and Dr. Fred Hord. Ozell Sutton serves as the Regional Director-Southeast Region of Community Relations Service for the U. S. Department of Justice. Dr. Fred Hord is a member of the faculty at Knox College and also serves as founder, Executive Director and Past President of the national organization, the Association for Black Culture Centers.

Dr. Martin L. King, Jr. Read-In — 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
This event will be coordinated by the Office of Multicultural Student Services at the University of Arkansas. As part of the annual celebration, everyone will be given an opportunity to read works of Dr. King during the four hours in the Arkansas Union, Walton College of Business, Old Main, Hunt Hall and Leflar’s School of Law. Copies of Dr. King’s literary works will be available at the site or you can bring your own copy from which to read or stop by to listen at any time during the designated time period.
