National Women’s Law Center Representatives to Speak at Law School

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Two representatives from the National Women’s Law Center in Washington, D.C., will speak at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 13, in the courtroom of the University of Arkansas School of Law.

Judith C. Applebaum, vice president and legal director of the NWLC, and Melanie Ross, field coordinator of the NWLC, will speak to the audience on the upcoming appointments to the United States Supreme Court and what those appointments will mean for women.

Sandra Day O’Connor, the first woman appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court, recently announced her retirement, and many court observers believe Chief Justice William Rehnquist may retire this year as well.

Appelbaum participates in litigation, advocacy and public education activities in many areas of the center's work, including judicial nominations. She writes and speaks frequently on these and other topics. She joined the center in 1995, after serving as counsel to Sen. Edward M. Kennedy on the Senate Judiciary Committee staff, and his chief advisor on women's rights issues.

Appelbaum received her law degree from Stanford Law School in 1977 and her undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1974.

The event is being sponsored by the Women's Law Student Association of the University of Arkansas School of Law. The public and members of the media are invited to attend.
