Greene Family Endows Honors Scholarships
FAYETTEVILLE — Richard and Tamara Greene of Fayetteville have made a $200,000 gift to establish University of Arkansas Honors Academy Scholarships in memory of Richard’s parents.
The Camden and Sue Greene Honors College Academy Scholarship will be for qualified students with a preference given to students from Arkansas. Their gift will be matched by $200,000 through the Matching Gift Program to create a $400,000 scholarship endowment.
Suzanne McCray, associate dean of the Honors College, said: “Richard and Tamara Greene have found a lasting and unique way to honor the memory of their loved ones. Through repeated scholarship support, the Greenes are making a lasting impact on our ability to provide scholarships to high ability students at the University of Arkansas. We are grateful for their continued generosity.”
The Greenes have previously supported the Chancellor’s Scholarship Program. Richard, a 1976 UA graduate in business, and Tamara Greene established the scholarships in memory of Richard’s parents, Camden and Sue Greene, who died in 2001.
Camden Greene was a retired naval officer who served in the South Pacific during World War II. After his retirement from the Navy in 1959 he and his wife Sue relocated to Hunter, Arkansas where they raised their two children, Susan and Richard, and developed a farming operation in Woodruff County. Sue Greene worked for many years at the Cache River Production Credit Association in Brinkley. In their later years they moved to Sherwood, Ark. and were active with Baptist Health Systems, the University of Arkansas Medical Sciences Foundation and the Arkansas Children’s Hospital Foundation.
The Greenes’ gift counts toward the Campaign for the Twenty-First Century, which recorded $981.6 million in gifts and pledges against the $1 billion goal as of June 10, 2005.
