Summer Youth Jazz Camps Open for Registration

The Community Music School announces two new summer music camps for 2017 that are all about jazz!

Junior High

Junior High Creative Jazz Camp will be held June 19-23 and is open to all music students entering grades 7-9 with at least one year of instruction on the instrument or voice. Camp will be held Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a slightly adjusted schedule on Friday to prepare for the final concert.

Students who attend this Creative Music Camp will learn new songs, new styles, and improve their improvisation skills and overall musicianship over the course of the camp. In addition to learning from our excellent camp instructors, students will participate in small-groups throughout the week that will focus on composition and discovering how to create music as an ensemble. No previous jazz experience or audition is required but a teacher recommendation and a short paragraph about why the student is interested in attending camp has been requested.

Tuition covers the cost of instruction, materials, and daily lunches. Go to the Junior High Creative Jazz Camp page for more information including the daily schedule, tuition and instructor bios. The early bird tuition deadline is March 28.

High School

High School Jazz Camp will be held July 23-28 and is open to students entering grades 10-12. This camp is focused on building a big band ensemble with instrumentation that includes alto, tenor, and bari sax, trombone, trumpet, drum, guitar, bass guitar and piano. No school jazz band experience required.

High School Jazz Camp provides students will an immersive experience that allows students to develop their improvisation skills, learn the basics of jazz music theory and history, and experience playing in a real jazz combo. Daily rehearsals will culminate in a final big band concert for family and friends Friday afternoon.

Tuition for High School Jazz Camp includes instruction, evening activities, and all meals and lodging for the week. For students who live in the NWA area and would prefer to commute, there is also a day camper option. Go to the High School Jazz Camp page for more information including the daily schedule, tuition, and instructor bios. The early bird fee deadline for this camp is April 28.
