Six Civil Engineering Students Earn Good Roads Scholarships

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Six civil engineering students have been awarded scholarships from the Arkansas Good Roads Foundation.

Each year, the Arkansas Good Roads Foundation, in association with the Arkansas Department of Transportation, provides a scholarship to support Arkansas students pursuing degrees related to transportation.

Students must: be attending an Arkansas college or university, working toward a B.S. degree in civil engineering or a qualifying transportation-focused field; maintain a GPA of 2.8 or higher; be within four semesters of graduating, and have made a commitment to work in the highway construction or a transportation-related industry in the state of Arkansas for a minimum of one year upon graduation.

This year's recipients, all civil engineering majors, are seniors Justin Edwards and Emily Sherrill; juniors Madeline Giebler and Brady Patrick; and sophomores Mariah Crews and Jocie Baker.

Justin Edwards
Edwards is from Paragould and expects to graduate in December 2019. He will begin working for Garver in North Little Rock in January.

Emily Sherrill
Sherrill is from Rogers and expects to graduate in December 2019 with a B.S. in civil engineering and a minor in Spanish. She is also the recipient of the Joe Steele & Hardy Croxton Memorial Scholarship, the Amanda Garbacz Civil Engineering Memorial Scholarship, and the Arkansas Academy of Civil Engineering Scholarship. After graduation, Sherrill plans to attend graduate school, conducting ashphalt research and earning her master's degree.

Madeline Giebler
Giebler is from Kimberling City, Missouri, and expects to graduate in December 2020. She is also the recipient of the Julian & Nana Stewart AACE Access Arkansas Scholarship, the Amanda Garbacz Civil Engineering Memorial Scholarship, the Arkansas Academy of Civil Engineers Scholarship, and the Lyndell J.C. George Endowed Scholarship. 

Brady Patrick
Patrick is from Tontitown and expects to graduate in May 2020.  He is also a recipient of the Arkansas Lottery Scholarship.

Mariah Crews
Crews is from Gower, Missouri, and expects to graduate in May 2021.

Jocie Baker
Baker is from Batesville and expects to graduate in December 2020. She is also the recipient of the Harvell Family Scholarship. Baker plans to pursue a master's degree upon graduation.

Micah Hale, head of the Department of Civil Engineering, said the support is important for the students and the state of Arkansas.

"These six outstanding students have committed to begin their careers as civil engineers in Arkansas.  It's great to see Arkansas Good Roads Foundation's commitment to retaining some of our best students in Arkansas and supporting their education."

The Arkansas Good Roads Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation.
